DEC402-12Probably no hot photos of Fabius charging into battle like Horatius and Roland, since Fabius never did that. He was, however, the second best Roman General of the second Punic War. Known as Cunctator (Delayer), he created the moniker Fabian, for his shadow tactics, trailing Hannibal, interposing between Rome, never giving battle, and preserving his forces. The classic prudent general, holding his opponent at bay until the rise of Scipio Africanus in the West. The Fabii clan also wore the reputation of most conservative (traditional) Roman Family. He is your man for waging Tolkien’s Long Defeat.

I suppose this pegs me as a history buff, which was my degree (the first of several we hope). Bitten by the military history bug at a young age by parents who were just relieved to find me reading something, the psychological imbalance is probably irreversible, but I have fought for a modicum of balance with healthy injections along the lines of Tocqueville, Adam Smith, and Chesterton, and I have an interest in pro-life public policy. The greatest single educational influence on me to date was two years study of Classical Rhetoric. To the rampant Hegelian progressivism, I can only conjure up the quaint image of Henry Adams before the Virgin of Chartres.

And Constantinople shall be liberated.
